Where do you find the end portal in Minecraft?

Minecraft’s endgame takes place in the appropriately titled dimension called The End, so we’ll be looking at how to find an End Portal. Something to note though, in Survival Mode End Portals cannot be created in any way whatsoever and must be found. However, we will go over how to make one at the end for those of you playing in Creative Mode

End portals are found within the portal room of a stronghold, hanging horizontally over a pool of lava, with a staircase leading up to the portal. A silverfish spawner sits in the staircase. Each individual end portal frame block has a 10% chance of containing an eye of ender, as determined by the world seed.

How to find the End Portal in Minecraft (PC/XBOX/PS4/MCPE)

No matter if you built your own or found an End Portal in a Stronghold, place all 12 of the Eyes of Ender in their respective blocks to activate it. Make sure that you place all of the Eyes of Ender vertically as the portal won’t open if you place even one Eye of Ender horizontally. You’ll know it has worked when you can’t see the lava (if you’re looking at the stronghold version) or the ground (your own created version).

Stepping into the activated End Portal will immediately transport you to the End, without any way of stopping it. Once you arrive at the End, you’ll spawn in the middle of a central island, with smaller islands visible around to explore. To access these outer islands or leave the End, you’ll need to defeat the Ender Dragon found on the main island. This will open up a portal to either ‘complete’ the game and return to the regular Minecraft overworld as we know it – or further explore the outer islands.

We’re sure you’ve got your reasons for visiting the End. Maybe you want to take down the fearsome Ender Dragon, maybe you need some precious resources like End Stone or Chorus, or perhaps, like us, you just like the bleak endless view of the void. Whatever your reason, you’ll need to hop into an End Portal to get there.

If you’re travelling to The End, make sure you come prepared to take on the Ender Dragon and all the other Minecraft mobs lying in wait. Here’s how to build a Minecraft shield, as well as how to enchant your weapons for the best chances of completing Minecraft and returning to the overworld in one blocky piece. If you’re struggling to find a stronghold, these Minecraft seeds containing End Portals cut right to the chase.

Trying to find an End Portal in Minecraft? If you want to travel to The End, then there’s only one means of transport – an End Portal. Taking the leap into another dimension takes commitment, as once you dip a toe in the End Portal, there’s no backing out.

To get to the End, where the Ender Dragon is, players must find the End Portal. End Portals can be found inside of strongholds.

Instead of the Eye of Ender teleporting the player, it will go into the air pointed in a direction, then fall back down as an item. The direction that it points to is where the nearest End Portal is, so players must follow that direction to be led to the End Portal.

In Minecraft, a lot of players consider defeating the Ender Dragon to be beating Minecraft as a whole, but finding the Ender Dragon is a big challenge in itself.

Finding an End Portal can seem almost impossible, but this article explains how to easily find one.

Only three strongholds spawn per map, so the nearest End Portal for most players is many thousands of blocks away. Once the stronghold is found, finding the End Portal itself is another massive challenge, considering strongholds consist of 50 rooms of various sizes.

What you’ll need to find an End Portal

Get Ender Pearls and Blaze Powder

Firstly, youll need to get Ender Pearls. There are several ways to get them.

  • In “Java Edition,” expert-level cleric villagers have a 66 percent chance to trade you an Ender Pearl for 4-5 emeralds. In “Bedrock Edition,” theyre guaranteed to offer this trade. Trading with clerics can be a fast way to get Ender Pearls. Emma Witman/Insider
  • Endermen, the tall monsters that only attack when looked at, will drop Ender Pearls 25 percent of the time when killed.
  • In the Nether, Piglins — the pig-like villagers that will attack you unless youre wearing gold — can give you Ender Pearls. Drop a gold ingot in front of one, and itll inspect it for a few moments, then give you a random item, which might be a couple of Ender Pearls. This is incredibly rare, however.
  • Next, youll need Blaze Powder.

  • Go to the Nether and kill Blazes, the flaming creatures that live in Nether Fortresses. Whenever you kill one, it has a 50 percent chance of dropping a blaze rod.
  • Placing one blaze rod into your crafting recipe will give you two units of blaze powder.
  • Craft an Eye of Ender

Eyes of Ender can be crafted by combining one Ender Pearl with one unit of Blaze Powder.

You only need one to find the stronghold, but you might need up to 12 when repairing the broken End Portal.

To find a stronghold, throw the Eye of Ender, follow, repeat

As noted, the Eye of Ender acts as a pseudo-compass. When you throw the Eye of Ender, itll rise high up into the air and move a few meters away. The direction it moves is the direction of the nearest stronghold.

After a moment, the Eye will either fall back to the ground for you to pick up and use again, or shatter in mid-air. Every time you throw the Eye, theres a 20 percent chance of it shattering.

To find a stronghold, simply throw the Eye of Ender, follow it, and then throw again. Its a bit monotonous, and will likely take several minutes, but the outcome will be worthwhile: arrival at a stronghold.

Eventually, the Eye of Ender will stop moving in a direction, and start settling in one spot. At that spot, start digging straight down. The stronghold is directly beneath you.

Search the stronghold for the broken End Portal

Once inside the stronghold, dont celebrate yet. We still need to find the portal room, where the broken End Portal waits. The portal room has three pools of lava in it, along with a staircase leading up to a monster spawner and the broken portal.

The Eye of Ender should have led you to the “start” of the stronghold, which is built like a maze. Thanks to dedicated Minecraft data miners, we know that the End Portal is generally fewer than 10 “rooms” away from the strongholds start point.

Youll see numerous doors, passageways and stairs, denoting “rooms.” If you go more than 10 or 12 rooms in any given direction and dont find the portal room, go back and try another way. You might want to place torches or another marker to note where youve been.

If you get lost, try going through doors with an awning, rather than doors that are flush with the wall, to reach the start and begin your search again.

    FAQ

What is the place where the end portal is?

Quick tip: In “Minecraft: Java Edition,” all strongholds have an End Portal. In “Minecraft: Bedrock Edition,” also known as “Minecraft for Windows 10,” not all strongholds have one. Fortunately, you don’t have to aimlessly strip mine the map to find a stronghold.

Where in the stronghold is the portal?

Once you find the stronghold, you will need to locate a staircase. Usually you can find ender portals in chambers below the stronghold via staircases leading down – this was the case in our game.
