WHY DID NOTCH SELL MINECRAFT?!
Neither Persson nor Microsoft immediately responded to Business Insiders request for comment on Perssons exclusion from the event.
The “comments and opinions” Microsoft referenced in its statement largely come from Perssons Twitter account, @notch.
“His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of Minecraft,” a Microsoft representative told Variety on Monday.
Persson has also spent a lot of time defending whiteness. “Its okay to be white,” Persson said in November 2017. “There clearly is an agenda against white men,” he wrote in December 2018.
The 10-year anniversary celebrates the launch of “Minecraft” as a playable game. It entered what is known as “alpha” — a software development jargon term that refers to the first usable form of software — on May 17, 2009. Microsoft is hosting an event to celebrate the upcoming anniversary, and says Persson isnt welcome.
However, Mojang co-founder Markus Notch Persson wont be around after the sell, as hes decided to leave the company behind along with two of other Mojang co-founders. Now, we have some insight as to why this all is going down.
“I love you. All of you,” he said finishing up his post. “Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become…In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.”
You may have heard by now that Microsoft is buying Minecraft developer Mojang for a massive $2.5 billion. Rumors of the deal began popping up last week, but Microsoft and Mojang officially announced the deal was going through today.
Notch took to his personal website today to explain why he sold Mojang to Microsoft and why hes done with successful games.
It doesnt seem like Notchs departure will be temporary, either. While he still plans to work on smaller projects, he emphasizes that, should anything he work on become increasingly popular, hell “probably abandon it immediately.” Notch says he makes games because theyre fun, not because hes set out to make the next big thing. And while there are sure to be numerous negative comments regarding his decision, he now feels less inclined to delve into them.
Go outside and do healthy stuff, find a good community, practice gratitude and give back. Maybe get a dog? Get back to us.
Despite wealth, fame and that infamous $70 million party pad in Los Angeles, which he reportedly outbid Jay Z and Beyonce for, Notch is feeling a bit down.
Notch’s dilemma (extreme wealth, access, privilege) is a textbook case study on what it means to find true happiness.
Minecraft’s creator Markus Persson took to Twitter this weekend to vent about life after selling his company Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
After some “knee pee” on his jellyfish sting, Notch then tweets that his goal for the day is to “not go to a club.”
